London grows upward,
constantly burying its past in layers
for supposed progress or repair,
but digging for a new sewer can expose
Roman walls and mosaics.
The River Tyburn that once fed the Thames?
It lies unseen beneath a mews building,
a slim concrete channel
like a trench or street gutter,
yet complete with the gloss of golden fish.
Extending the London Underground
reveals churches, crypts and vast wine cellars.
A city sleeps beneath the city.
London, restless in its bed,
still lifts its bony head to speak.
